The "Black Domino Box" EP finds Mr Hawkline in a state of flux. Whereas his previous albums "A Cup Of Salt" and "The Strange Uses Of Ox Gall", were vinyl exercises in Sandy Bull powered finger picking and field recordings, with only a pinch of songwriting, Hawkline has undergone a Dylanesque electrical epiphany, becoming a jangling guitar hero of 1983 to 1996 vintage in the process, simultaneously fully embracing, for the first time, The Song.

Lyrically, Hawkline channels his idol Richard Brautigan through a rough cement mixture of sludge rock, Felt and seaweed, listing his possessions in his rented room in what is a poignant appraisal of a dispossessed generation of multi-tasking, rarely paid young musicians.

Henry’s Funeral Shoe is formed by Welsh brothers Aled (guitars, vocals) and Brennig Clifford (drums, percussion). Their blues inspired rockn’roll reaches back to the sounds of yesterday, and artists such as Canned Heat, early Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, The Groundhogs (which who they recently shared the stage), and even early Captain Beefheart come to mind. “Donkey Jacket” (named for the coat worn by Welsh miners) cranks up the blues power, but also delivers some emotional acoustic numbers, making a for a richer album than their highlypraised 2009 self-titled debut. The album was recorded in Wales by Tim Hammill and mixed in Detroit by Jim Diamond, and features guest appearances by John ‘Ned’ Edwards, a long time collaborator of Van Morrison who also played with Dr John and Solomon Burk, on harmonica, slide guitar and mandolin, Pete Hurley, the bass player for the legendary seventies Welsh band Lone Star, and Justin Beynon of the Broken Vinyl Club on piano.
LP is limited and clear vinyl : super Alive! records style.

Asides from being such lovely friends of ours, this lot of local scientist/musicians make top notch electronic. They are like the ’Wombles’ they aren’t all that hairy but they do find their instruments in skips and charity shops and fashion them back to life with copious amounts of gaffa tape. Rather sketchy and lo-fi but truly special and most highly recommended!
