2011’s Extra Playful EP, John Cale’s first set of new material in six years, found the ex-Velvet Underground legend revisiting some of the more playful aspects of his early solo career, which should come as no surprise since he had spent the year prior performing his 1973 masterpiece, Paris 1919, in its entirety. Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood, his first full-length outing since Black Acetate, continues in that same vein, mining the oddball, chamber pop sound that dominated his immediate post-Velvets output, while maintaining the austere, experimental art rock demeanor that informed much of his later work.

“CYRK is like a time travel travelogue which continually returns the sea,” says Le Bon, who took the album’s title from the Polish word for Circus and took inspiration from a trip to the Isle Of Eigg. “I mostly write about the sea, matters of the heart and animals – or a mish-mash of all three.”
Recorded with producer Krissie Jenkins in Cardiff and set for release on Gruff Rhys’s Ovni imprint, CYRK found Le Bon raiding Super Furry Animals’s collection of synths, pedals and guitars. “We spent days plugging different things into one another – it was so much fun,” she says.
Players include Le Bon’s “trusty” backing band (Andy Fung on drums, Steve Black on bass and Y Niwl’s Sion Glyn on guitar) plus H. Hawkline on synths and Meilyr and Gwion from Racehorses playing brass on Great. “If you listen very carefully,” says Le Bon, “you can hear Gruff Rhys wailing backing vocals on Falcon Eyed too.”

Recorded at the same time as CYRK but the songs naturally pooled into two camps. Whilst ‘CYRK’ bounds around erratically and unknowingly like a younger sibling, ‘CYRK II’ is its older sister, bearing songs of a more starkly confessional nature.

Although there is a longing and sadness that litters ‘CYRK II’, it never truly realises itself, often hiding in the forest of lyrics and interrupting instrumentation when on the cusp of revealing too much.

* Here he comes. The dark horse. The bloke at the back. The odd one. Cian Ciaran is a founder member of that democratic state of music known as Super Furry Animals.

He’s got this album, right. It’s a real beauty, songs of love and longing; delicate, fragile and understated. People who know about these kind of things have been whispering about it ever since Cian started messing about in the studio. This is a bit special, they said.

Just so you know, Cian is the baby of the SFA bunch. He has a performing history in music stretching back to his early teens. His first love was acid house and he didn’t hear anything by Neil Young until he was 21 years old.

* In our desire to understand one of the most intriguing groups of their time, we gave the Super Furries name tags and job descriptions, praying they wouldn’t move around too much to confuse us.

* That made Cian the one who sat at a keyboard and added vocal harmonies when they played live. On occasion, he released techno tracks of his own making. That was him sorted.

* So it’s no wonder this debut album comes as a surprise, even to those who’ve known Cian for donkeys. It was written entirely on the piano and features contributions from fellow-Furries Dafydd Ieuan and Guto Pryce, as well as regular collaborators Osian and Mei Gwynedd (from Sibrydion) Outside In is an album that asks: ‘What’s it all about, then?’ and is smart enough not to try to answer the question in line twelve of track eight.

And just in case you’re looking for musical signposts, Cian has spent the past year or so listening to hip-hop, r’n’b, experimental electronica and bits of doo-wop. The album sounds nothing like any of it.

It features Mr Phormula and Nine Tonne (from Diwygiad) and a slew of other guests and musicians and producers. Chwalfa is here - it’ll blow you away...

Carwyn has blessed so many projects with his talents over the years, but Colorama, and especially this latest record, displays his gifts as a song writer, arranger and singer that until about six years ago he kept hidden. He’s an intrigue when it comes to his own music, not easily defined. It’s got psychedelic touches, quirky lyrical styles, strange subject matter and all overlayed with gorgeous playing and Carwyn’s distinctive voice.

For the last eight years Carwyn has been a rock of Gibraltar for Edwyn (Collins) particularly during his period of recovery from illness. They work intuitively together and it has been Edwyn’s deep pleasure to help produce Colorama’s latest and greatest work.
