Commonly, ignorantly but understandably lumped in with its wealthy not-too-distant cousin, Bollywood, Lollywood was inspired by, but often overshadowed by its posh and well-traveled relative. Following the simplistic Bombay + Hollywood = Bollywood name game (that would in later years spawn Nollywood in Nigeria), Lollywood’s Lahore based film industry was a profitable and vibrant one that found great success in the modest boundaries of its own country but was seldom savoured outside Pakistan.

Soul Jazz present the soundtrack to Ericka Beckman’s ’135 Grand Street New York 1979’, a film of New York’s No Wave scene in the ascendant at the end of the 1970s and featuring the likes of Rhys Chatham, Ut, Theoretical Girls, Chinese Puzzle plus bonus tracks not used in the film. Director/Producer Beckman has kept this film and its soundtrack in storage for the last 30 years, sheltering an amazing document of a scene-not-a-scene that existed for an all-too-brief but vital time in the East Village and Soho between the shockrush of Punk and the impending rule of Dance music. This particular rock has been overturned a number of times in the last decade, most notably on a reissue of the Eno-produced ’No New York’ album, but this is much rawer, and possibly truer look at the scene, covering a wider number of unheard bands and captured live in the act, with no overdubs.
