Angelo Badalamenti - Buffalo Tom

Badalamenti, Angelo - Blue Velvet Artist Angelo Badalamenti
Title Blue Velvet OST
Label Fire Soundtracks
You know that feeling you get when you’re shook awake in mid-dream? You were teetering on the ledge of a building, or maybe trying to free a butterfly from a spider web while wearing cricket gloves? Perhaps you’re running late for a train and your short cut takes you through a bad part of town, you’re being followed but the ever changing reflection in the shop window is a younger you, a healthier person – with a better hairstyle. It’s an anxiety thing, an off-kilter almost world, best summed up on the soundtrack for Blue Velvet, David Lynch’s 1986 film that nods somnambulantly to the shadowy netherworld of film noir.

Badalamenti, Angelo - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me Artist Angelo Badalamenti
Title Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Label Death Waltz
Fire Walk With Me is an altogether more brooding affair than the Twin Peaks series soundtrack. Badalamenti won a grammy for the title track of this LP and it’s not hard to see why- it’s dangerous, and bursting with smokey jazz thanks to Jimmy Scott. We went back to the master tapes in the Warner Archives and had this recut to fit across two LPs as the score clocks in at 51 minutes. It sounds incredible and punchy, but super nuanced too.

Big Lebowski OST Artist Various Artists
Title The Big Lebowski OST
Label Back To Black
The soundtrack to one of the Coen Brothers finest moments is a cornocupia of exotic titbits, classic (but obscure) rock cuts and made-up score sounds. Don’t fret, yes it has got Kenny Roger’s psychedelic stoner country tune "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" on it. Perhaps less familar, although no less brilliant, is Bob Dylan’s "The Man In Me" which accompanies the movies’ opening credits. You’ve also got some Captain Beefheart, Elvis Costello, Henry Mancini, Nina Simone and even the Gipsy Kings’ cover of "Hotel California"! Plus, composer Carter Burwell’s track "Wie Glauben", featured in the flick as music by Kraftwerk rip-offs Autobahn. Wonderful.

Standing alongside the cast’s interpretations of classics from his canon are the three final David Bowie studio recordings, co-produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti and recorded with Donny McCaslin and his quartet, the same band that played on Bowie’s ‘Blackstar’ album, these last three songs — “No Plan,” “Killing A Little Time,” “When I Met You”— bring completely new dimensions to their cast counterparts.

Bowie, David / Various Artists - Bowie Heard Them Here First Artist David Bowie / Various Artists
Title Bowie Heard Them Here First
Label Ace

The latest release in our “Heard Them Here First” series traces the career of David Bowie via an eclectic selection of the other writers’ songs he chose to record. The collection kicks off with Paul Revere & the Raiders’ ‘Louie - Go Home’, which he covered as leader of Davie Jones & the King Bees in 1964, and concludes with ‘I Took A Trip (On A Gemini Spaceship)’ by the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, a song included on his 2002 album “Heathen”, and covers all points between.

As one might expect from the chameleonic Bowie, the featured tracks emanate from a diverse array of musical genres, eras and artists – from Lotte Lenya & the Three Admirals’ 1930 recording of Bertolt Brecht & Kurt Weill’s ‘Alabama Song’ to the Pixies’ spiky ‘Cactus’ from 1988’s “Surfer Rosa”. Other unlikely bedfellows: Johnny Mathis and Iggy Pop; Bobby Bland and the Velvet Underground; Jacques Brel and Chuck Berry; Martha & the Vandellas and Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers, make for a strikingly wide-ranging programme.

The booklet features an essay by Ian Johnston, who also wrote the notes for our recent “The New York Dolls Heard Them Here First” and “The Ramones Heard Them Here First” collections.
