Two-thirds of Sigur Rós, bass player Georg Holm and drummer Orri Páll Dýrason, have teamed up with Icelandic composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Sigur Rós touring guitarist, and Georg’s brother, Kjartan Holm to create an uninterrupted 72-minute instrumental album inspired by 100 years of archive footage of vaudeville, circuses and carnivals.
A pulsating work throughout, the 14 track album, which has been made to accompany the forthcoming BBC documentary film The Show of Shows, was written and recorded at Sigur Rós’s new studio space in Reykjavik, and features contributions from the celebrated South Iceland Chamber Choir.
Title Holy Pictures
Julia Holter’s second album, Ekstasis, is a collection of songs written and recorded across the span of three years. Ekstasis marks a return to the playful searching of her 2007 Eating the Stars EP, but guided by newly-learned disciplines, slightly better technology, and nearly limitless home recording time. While Ekstasis reflects the conventions of her classical training, the album is also uncannily, if unknowingly, poppy. Holter’s approach to crafting the songs of Ekstasis centered around what she describes as, "open ear decision: what seemed to sound best for that moment."
Title Loud City Song
New album of avant-pop experimentation from the LA based singer / composer that blends influence ranging from Joni Mitchell to Arthur Russell and the poetry of Frank O’Hara into a daringly unique work as conceptually strong as it is immediately affecting.
‘Loud City Song’ follows, and progresses brilliantly from ‘Ekstasis’, one of last year’s most critically lauded records.
Originally released in November 2011 on Leaving Records in two runs of 500 copies only, this modern masterpiece proved to be the most inspired, captivating and unique debut album of the year, and has been out of print - and much coveted - ever since.
Inspired by Euripides’ ‘Hippolytus’, the sheer scope and scale of ambition evident in ‘Tragedy’s fifty minutes is staggering.
Comprised of voice, synths, drum machines, piano, cello, saxophone, samples, vocoders, ensemble musicians and a chorus, ‘Tragedy’ is a transcendental amalgamation of avant garde and pop conventions, and of organic and electronic compositional forms - an entire universe of a record blessed with its own beautifully peculiar logic.
Title Have You In My Wilderness
Have You in My Wilderness was written from the heart - warm, dark and raw - and explores love, trust, and power in human relationships. While love songs are familiar in pop music, Holter manages to stay fascinatingly oblique and enigmatic, with some of the most sublime and transcendent music she has ever written. Like Holter’sprevious albums, Have You in My Wilderness is multi-layered and texturally rich, featuring an array of electronic and acoustic instruments played by an ensemble of gifted Los Angeles musicians.
Have You in My Wilderness is also Holter’s most sonically intimate album, with her vocals front and centre in the mix, lifted out of the layers of smeared, hazy effects. The result is striking: clear and vivid, but disarmingly personal.
Title Holy Ghost
Now with their debut long-player Holy Ghost! have delivered on that early promise. Kicking off with the stomping 4/4 beat of recent free track ‘Do It Again’, it’s a blitz through the old and new – from 70’s and 80’s R&B to disco and new wave – to create an brilliantly original and thrilling debut album.

Following a UK tour with label-mate H. Hawkline the band entered the studio to start recording their debut album in the early spring of 2015. Inspired by the plug-in-and-play quasi-improvisational approach of Deerhunter and Ariel Pink, the album is the sound of the summer of adolescence slipping into the autumn of adulthood.
Here the wit of Kurt Vonnegut and twisted storytelling of Wes Anderson collide to tell tales of banal jobs, relationships, memorable parties and passing characters. Musically melodic, fragile, wonky, witty, poetic and pop (definitely, defiantly pop) the skewed melodies and oddball narratives combine in perfect symbiotic musical harmony, each song a small burst of sunshine to warm the coldest of hearts. Think Teenage Fanclub, Guided By Voices, Randy Newman, Big Star, Silver Jews – but birthed in northern English towns in the 21st century.
