Henry’s Funeral Shoe is formed by Welsh brothers Aled (guitars, vocals) and Brennig Clifford (drums, percussion). Their blues inspired rockn’roll reaches back to the sounds of yesterday, and artists such as Canned Heat, early Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, The Groundhogs (which who they recently shared the stage), and even early Captain Beefheart come to mind. “Donkey Jacket” (named for the coat worn by Welsh miners) cranks up the blues power, but also delivers some emotional acoustic numbers, making a for a richer album than their highlypraised 2009 self-titled debut. The album was recorded in Wales by Tim Hammill and mixed in Detroit by Jim Diamond, and features guest appearances by John ‘Ned’ Edwards, a long time collaborator of Van Morrison who also played with Dr John and Solomon Burk, on harmonica, slide guitar and mandolin, Pete Hurley, the bass player for the legendary seventies Welsh band Lone Star, and Justin Beynon of the Broken Vinyl Club on piano.

With a focus this time on melody and simple production, this is their most accessible record to date. Featuring David-Ivar’s idiosyncratic vocals and engaging poetry. Inspired by songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Jonathan Richman and David Berman, his soft accent lends a naïve charm to his words. Adam Selzer recorded the album at his studio in Portland (M Ward / Decemberists). A perfect fit for Herman Dune, he was able to record songs played live and make them sound rich and vibrant. The songs were played on an acoustic guitar, the way they were originally conceived, each telling a different story but working together beautifully as a whole to create an effortlessly classic album.

In his book Sweet Soul Music, Peter Guralnick described Eddie Hinton as "the last of the great white soul singers," and his debut album, 1978’s Very Extremely Dangerous, sounds like a glorious throwback to the salad days of the Muscle Shoals, AL, R&B hit factory of the 1960s, where Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin cut some of their most memorable songs. Hinton had already earned an estimable reputation as a session guitarist by the time he finally got to step up to the mic as a solo artist, and Very Extremely Dangerous features him backed up by the always-expert Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and Hinton’s strong and wiry guitar runs fit the group’s emphatic support like a glove.
