What transpires is a dreamy blend of slow electronica, glitchy beats and German influences such as Tangerine Dream. In some cases, what that creates is anthemic, as with the glittery Burnt Sienna; in others, such as Cylopean Remains, it’s like difficult easy listening, with globules of sound resisting each other like chip fat and washing up liquid. But it’s an arresting set nevertheless.

Although the Wave Pictures influences are dead easy to spot (Hefner /Jonathan Richman) there is no doubt as to the conviction this band has. There’s a genuine and unabashed ’heart on sleeve’ charm too them that just makes me smile and reminisce about living at home, listening to John Peel under the duvet.

David-Ivar Herman Dune has said “they are probably one of the best bands nowadays performing on this planet” and that the songs are “really accessible and uplifting”. The Wave Pictures have put out an array of different cdr albums in the past, played with John Darnielle (of the Mountain goats) for a 7” on 4AD, have featured on a Peel session with Herman Dune. The album is full of beautiful songs with interesting and playful lyrics; the music is striped down to the bare essentials of drums, bass and ace guitar solos, its only time before their talents are noticed.

The Pod was recorded by Dean and Gene Ween on a Tascam four-track cassette recorder between January and October 1990. The album was then produced and mixed by Andrew Weiss and for this edition has been re-mastered by Howie Weinberg. The Pod is probably the bnd’s most surreal album. All of the songs have a murky, sludgy quality to them, possibly due to being recorded on a four-track, and many of the vocals are manipulated in strange ways.
