A creaking beast of rattling rhythms, squeaking percussion and cascading instrumentation, songs like ’Jesus in a Show’ and ’Words Run Dry’ patter forth like an afternoon dream, presided over by Durant’s hazy vocals and Mr L’s crackling production. Elsewhere, ’Lliffe Morning’ is tantalising glimpse of candle-lit piano, ’Big Man’ etches its refrain of "I tried, tried to shake the thought..." over a plodding selection of viscous electronica, whilst ’Over and Out’ is a heartbreaking ode to the end of a relationship. Beautiful.

’Shadows’ is the ninth studio album from the Scottish power-pop band Teenage Fanclub. Five years since their 2005 release ’Man-Made’, the Glaswegians wind down the jangly-pop of previous albums here, maturing towards dulcet harmonised rock songs, such as the piano led ’Dark Clouds’. However the alternating songwriters of Norman Blake, Raymond McGinley and Gerard Love provide the band’s trademark melodic, hook-filled sound on single ’Baby Lee’.

’Know Better Learn Faster’ sports a fuller sound, with more pop tricks and trickier arrangements that incorporate swirling Phillip Glass-like keyboards, Pavement slackness, New Orleans horns and bluegrass tinged banjo alongside guitar, bass and drums. The album contains a collection of hardlearned lessons about love, sex and human connection.
’Know Better learn Faster’ is a more mature record, slightly disillusioned with the world, but no less playful and with no less personality. Thao conveys a warm exuberance that keeps the music spry despite the weighty subject matter and the band’s energy rarely flags; instead the guitars grow only more manic and urgent as the album progresses.

’A Chorus Of Storytellers’ was recorded by Ryan Hadlock in the frosty month of February 2009 at Bear Creek Studio, just outside of Seattle, and it was mixed in the decidedly warmer month of June in Reykjavik, Iceland by Birgir Jon Birgisson (of Sigur Ros).
For the first time in five albums, The Album Leaf recorded as a whole band. In the past, almost every instrument was performed by principal songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy LaValle. This time the whole band was invited to participate and the result is possibly their best record yet.

Buoyed by the praise lavished upon its predecessor ‘III’, the band were adamant that ‘Le Voyage’ would be bigger, brighter and better than anything in their catalogue to date, and we can report that they have been successful in their quest. The sun-bleached European movie soundtrack sentiment that underpinned their previous records is still here in full force, but it comes rolled up in something defiantly more psychedelic, and in turn more unpredictable. Sewn together by vignettes which bring to mind Delia Derbyshire’s Radiophonic hiccups or Luc Ferrari’s tape collage, the band have put together an album which genuinely takes you on a journey. Surely it can’t be a mistake calling the album ‘Le Voyage’ then, a title which simultaneously brings to mind the work of Serge Gainsbourg and Alejandro Jordorowsky – something deeply visual but effortlessly beautiful.
