Artist CarolineTitle Verdugo Hills
Label Temporary Residence
Having spent the past several years as a full-time member of the small musical army that is Mice Parade, Caroline has mastered the art of mingling a dozen or more distinct sounds to form miniature symphonies for the soul that can turn from an icy chill to a warm glow in the span of a few breaths. Her lyrical delivery and subject matter have matured enormously, exposing new depths to her emotional range to accompany the deceptively subdued mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. Ultimately Verdugo Hills succeeds emphatically in giving electronic music a comforting heartbeat and a contemplative soul, feats Caroline were unlikely to accomplish had she taken the straight road to overnight fame and fortune. She has become an intriguing and understated figure in the world of electronic pop music, accelerating the genre with startling, unexpected beauty while leaving lasting impressions on all of us who are along for the ride.

Artist Crystal AntlersTitle Tentacles
Label Touch and Go
A brilliant explosion of dreamy-haze instrumentation, with a turbine-whine of vocals. (but not in an annoying way!)
Artist Cut CopyTitle Zonoscope
Label Modular
A melting pot of ideas streaming from a collective of music fanatics, the album embraces new combinations that span a rhythm section on motorik overdrive (Alisa), the reincarnation of Chicago’s raw house pioneers producing EBM deep in the wilderness (Turn From Stone and Blink & You’ll Miss A Revolution) and the epic 15 minute closing minimal disco mantra (Sun God). Seamlessly bridged together by a series of ambient hallucinatory miniatures, the percussion drenched celebrations are lively awakenings. Whitford runs through the exotic arsenal of percussion which they gathered to give their tracks that infectious tropical propulsion; “we used all sorts of strange bongos, rototoms, congas, 10 kinds of shaker, 15 different cowbells; anything and everything. Even wine bottles filled with different amounts of water.”
