Kate Tempest - Dylan Thomas (Rhys Ifans)

Tempest, Kate - Everybody Down Artist Kate Tempest
Title Everybody Down
Label Big Dada
Kate Tempest is best known as a poet, perhaps a performance poet or a spoken word artist. She has a novel coming out next year with Bloomsbury. But ask Kate what she is and she’s more likely to say she’s a rapper who writes. That’s her first love. Listen to her voice, her cadences, the accent, and you’ll hear more of Skinnyman than Seamus Heaney, a veteran of Deal Real’s legendary Friday night rap battles but also someone at home doing a book reading at Foyles.

Kate Tempest understands the story rhyme, loves it. Which is why Everybody Down is something like a “novel rhyme” – twelve ‘chapters’ telling one long, complex story, a unique, one-off project, almost unique in the history of the form.

Thomas, Dylan (Rhys Ifans) - Under Milk Wood Artist Dylan Thomas (Rhys Ifans)
Title Under Milk Wood OST
Label Cadiz
This soundtrack to Kevin Allen’s adaptation of Dylan Thomas’s ’Under Milk Wood’ features the entire film with all the dialogue and Rhys Ifans’ first voice narration, and includes contributions from many musicians, in particular the composer Mark Thomas whose work underpins everything. Film critic Geoffrey McNab said, ’This is a film that you can watch with your eyes shut and still enjoy’. The soundtrack was recorded in the specially re-opened Ty Dylan Thomas [formerly BBC Alexandra Road] where Dylan Thomas himself recorded. The OST features Charlotte Church, who stars in the film, and works from Verdi, Chopin, Elgar J.S. Bach and more. The score was rendered by a full symphony orchestra and a specialist ensemble. There was also hurdy gurdy, accordions and harmonium alongside the Willis pipe organ at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea for ’Organ Morgan’s’ musical journey through his dreams.
