As you may know, we’ve been talking to the Welsh Assembly in regard to our rent situation here in The Hayes in Cardiff. The Manic Street Preachers are supporting us and there is also a petition set up online here.

"The rock band Manic Street Preachers has lent its support to a campaign to save the world’s oldest record shop.

Spillers Records has been selling music in Cardiff since 1894 but could be forced to close by a sharp increase in the rent for its premises in The Hayes.

In the mid-1980s two of the Manics busked outside the shop, well before their band became a household name across Britain and overseas.

A statement signed by band members Nicky Wire, James Dean Bradfield and Sean Moore reads, "Spillers was a lifeline. It gave us our musical education - the only record shop in Wales where we could find the music that made us who we are."

Owen John Thomas AM is campaigning to save Spillers Records and has organised a petition urging the landowner, Helical Bar, to acknowledge that Spillers Records is an asset to Cardiff city centre and to charge an affordable rent.

Mr Thomas, Plaid Cymru’s Shadow Culture Minister, said, "In a recent interview, Nicky Wire fondly recalled travelling down to Cardiff in 1986-87 with fellow band member James Dean Bradfield to busk outside Spillers Records.

"Who would have thought that two decades later, the band would be returning to the site of their humble beginnings to launch a campaign to save the world’s oldest record shop from closure?

"It is very sad that it has come to this, but it seems fitting that the band, who are still customers at the shop, should front the campaign to save it."

He said support for his statement of opinion at the National Assembly had been "fantastic", with over 50% of AMs signing up to it in the first week alone.

Those AMs represented all the political parties at the Assembly.

Mr Thomas added, "Chain stores increasingly dominate our high streets, and shops frequently come and go. Spillers Records stands out as an exception to this incessant change.

"The shop is also part of our musical heritage and is something of which we should be very proud."
