NEW THIS WEEK...
- We are now stocking the new 7” single by Snowdonia super-surf group, Y Niwl. Who are about to go on tour supporting Cate Le Bon.
- This week we also have a Persian pop, funk, folk and psych compilation of various artists from the 60s and 70s, ‘Pomegranates’.This collection is a trove, ripe for discovery and rediscovery, worthy of inclusion in the canon of idiosyncratic musical gems from the global south.
- Rough Trade announce the signing of electronic musician and producer Pantha Du Prince and his new full length, ’Black Noise’ this week. Pantha Du Prince fuses house, techno, shoegazy electronica and psychedelic electro-acoustic soundscapes into music that is at once both beautiful and bewitching. ’Black Noise’ also features special guests Noah lennox of Animal Collective and Tyler Pope of !!! and LCD Soundsystem.
- The beautiful limited double 10” record by Thee Silver Mt.Zion, ‘Kollaps Tradixionales’ that was released last week, is now sadly unavailable. It has however, now been released on CD and as a limited super-deluxe CD edition. The limited CD includes a 7” x 9” art book and foldout lyric sheet insert printed on flecked feltweave text paper...”what a beauty!”
- ‘Eggs’ is Danish psychedelic pop quintet Oh No Ono’s debut album on the Leaf label. “Like MGMT and The Flaming Lips before them, they have a way of combining a deviant sensibility with pure pop that pulls you in”.
- Yeasayer are a psychedelic rock band from Brooklyn, New York, although the band themselves describe their sound as ‘middle eastern-psych-snap-gospel’. ‘Odd Blood’ is an album divided into two halves; the first being top heavy with pop songs, while the latter full of the playful and strange.
- Plant Mu have been wanting to make an album with Ceephax Acid Crew a.k.a Andy Jenkinson for a long time now. The aim has always been to put together the definitive ’Creephax’ album, and with ’United Acid Emirates’ they’ve done it. With a strong 80s feel and a sound that’s influenced by computer game music, Italo Disco, Synth pop, Techno and House. United Acid Empirates showcases Ceephax at his best and it puts him up there with Aphex’s recent analogue experiments.
- ‘Heligoland’ is the long-awaited fifth album from the legendary Bristol trip-hop pioneers, Massive Attack. With founder member Grantley ‘Daddy G’ Marshall back in the band and a host of famous vocal collaborators on board including Damon Albarn, Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Guy Garvey (Elbow) and Horace Andy, it has a remarkably distinct sound from any of their earlier works.
- With his first album in 13 years, Gil Scott-Heron is back with ‘I’m New Here’. Still challenging conventions and expectations, and sounding as vital as ever; a record that reveals something unexpected at every turn.
- ‘2’ is the second release from Retribution Gospel Choir who, following their 2008 self-titled debut, signed to Sub Pop Records. RGC blend a classic rock sound that often incorporates elements of dub. It’s a mix that results in songs which use shimmering guitar lines and machine gun drum fills to create an atmospheric and powerful listen.
- ‘Shadow Of An Empire’ is the second album from Irish singer-songwriter Fionn Regan, and features a mixture of acoustic songs, similar to his debut album, and electric songs, like those on his earlier releases. Regan blends different sounds into his work, with almost Jack White-esque guitar under more acoustic, folky songs.
